Postpartum depression also known as PPD, is an illness that can happen to a woman after delivering the baby. This kind of depression may be accompanied by the baby blues that can be difficult to deal with. The last thing a new mother wants to deal with is their own behavioral problems. It is important to realize however that in order to have a health active baby that Mom need to takes care of herself.

Postpartum depression comes with many forms of signs and symptoms. A high majority of women suffering from postpartum depression will experience one or all of the following problems: exhaustion, moody, agitated excessive crying, anxiety, anger, and a general feeling of sadness.

PPD and the signs and symptoms that go with are caused by a decrease in hormone production. Recent studies also suggest that the Omega-3 acid called DHA aids in the body being able to deal with disorders such as PPD. DHA fatty acids make up a percentage of the brain and nerve endings which is important for the production and well being of the entire body.

When women go through nine months of pregnancy on top of labor and delivery the hormone levels and also DHA decrease drastically. When this happens there can be a risk of postpartum depression, increased anxiety, and other mood disorders.

Communication and honesty is important when dealing with the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression. If your partner is pregnant in the last trimester, or has already delivered it is important that you monitor her behavior. Providing moral support, talking about how she is feeling and helping to ensure that she gets sufficient rest is essential. Many women will deny the feelings that they are experiencing, they may feel that they are not being strong for their baby. It ‘s a great idea for the couple to discuss the signs and symptoms that are associated with PPD. Make an agreement that you both will communicate any changes in mood, and feelings of sadness. PPD affects not only Mom, but also can have a negative affect towards the baby as well other members of the family. It is very important that everyone communicates their feelings.

Other symptoms of the disorder may include but is not limited too, sleeping issues (oversleeping/or not sleeping at all), feelings of anger, guilt, and a general feeling of dread.

As discussed it is very important to not let Mom become withdrawn. Family members and friends should visit and spend time with the new mother. Many women can overcome postpartum depression by simply communicating their feelings with her partner, changing her diet and doing light exercise. If these things do not help, consult your health care professional as you may need to look at various medical treatments and drug therapy.
